Our K9 Security involves the following:
I had an entire career in customer service prior to embarking on a different path.
Having always been involved in some way with dogs both in pet training and physical rehabilitation, I was seeking to take my K9 experience to a new level.
I didn’t have any experience with “working dogs” so I made phone call and was invited to do a walk on at WK9 kennels, the first time I had a working dog on my leash I was hooked.
I worked my way up from kennel team to exercising the working dogs on the field and on the trails surrounding the area, to security work and arrived at my goal to become K9 handler. The day I validated with my K9 partner was one of my proudest moments.
I had fantastic support , mentorship and the learning curve was steep, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything, it was so rewarding.
I’m so lucky to spend my day in the company of these fantastic dogs and to be part of an elite team in the truest sense of the word.
I have owned dogs my whole life. I also found I enjoyed helping make people feel safe. I always assumed that a K9 Officer was something where you had to be a Police Officer or Customs Officer.
I was not aware of the amount of possibilities that existed for working as a K9 Officer for Security in a Private Sector capacity. Now that I am a K9 Officer, I know I have the best job in the world. I get to work and train on a daily basis with amazing dogs and make people feel safe wherever I am posted. What I like about the job is the variety of sites I can work at: major transportation sites, arenas, remote camps, urban environments etc.. I also enjoy the responsibility I get when I am working.
The bond that exists between myself and my service dog is one that is special and unique and I don’t think there are many jobs where you can combine public safety with working directly with animals. I always tell people that this is not a job but a passion.
In 2000, while waiting in my vehicle for a ferry to arrive at Horseshoe Bay, I watched a Detection Team from Western K9 Security Services working in the car lanes. What impressed me was the professionalism as the team worked together. I already had worked in Security at this time both as Mobile and Static Guard and had always had a desire to work as a K9 Handler. During the winter of 2018, this desire became a reality, as I was recruited by Western K9 Security Services for a patrol team . My partner, K9 Franca, and myself have been training and working together since then. I have found this to be a very rewarding and satisfying experience working with all my team members and Training Staff at Western K9 Security Services and look forward eagerly to the future with my partner, K9 Franca.
